Nassim Hill Bakery Bistro Bar @ Tanglin Road

Had a birthday celebration here with my family. It was almost full house on a weekday night. Most likely due to the 1 for 1 main DBS card promotion that had just ended today. With their sitting capacity & the amount of people that night, the noise level is uncontainable.

steak
Steak & Eggs ($22) – Ok the star is supposed to be the steak but guess his lens preferred the eggs instead. This is a 150gm US Agus prime sirloin steak. I asked for it to be medium. It came tender, chewy, juicy, nice. The homemade entrecote sauce at the side is a brown sauce which has a bit of wine taste. Goes very well with the steak.

chilli crab pastaChilli Crab Pasta ($24) – Generous amount of crab meat. The garlic is huge & overwhelming too. The taste is uniquely nice but it gets kind of spicy & feels too much towards the end.

salmonSalmon with Sweet Potato & Beet Chips ($24) – All I can remember is that the beet chips tasted bitter. The presentation of this dish look kind of pathetic though.

carbonara
Carbonara ($21) – We ordered this for the kids but end up we enjoyed it more. The savory buttery cream sauce makes you want more of it.

waffleCheddar Cheese Bacon Waffles ($19) – The waffles are tasty with bacon bits in there. I find it a tad oily though.

browniesBrownie Parfait ($10) – Ended with this dessert as my birthday cake.

Other than that night being too noisy, the food makes up for it. Contrary to this place being a bakery, they need to work more on it’s dessert menu. This place does not face the main road. Walking along the small road will lead you to its entrance.

49 Seats @ Kreta Ayer Road

49seats2A monthly eating affair with my group of friends from office. It’s my birthday month & my turn to get a treat from them 🙂

drinksIce Lemon Tea & Ginger Ale ($3 each)

mushroom soupCream of Mushroom ($5.90) – It’s good but not to the extend of licking the bowl as what my friend read from somewhere.

fish bites
Fish Bites 10 Pcs ($9.90) – I like this. Tasted like fish & chips in bite size.

chicken wingsFried Wings & Drumlets ($9.90) – Mediocre

fried fish
Pan Fried Fish with Alskempi Sauce ($16.90) – This is my main. Though the fish looks thin & plain, it’s very nicely done. The sauce in the side bowl is savory, creamy with seafood inside. A very appetizing dip.

tom yam pastaTom Yam Seafood Pasta ($14.90) – Actually I’m very keen in this dish as I like the sour & spicy combination of tom yam. However, my tolerance for spiciness is quite low so I dare not risk this as my main. Stole a few mouths & I really like it but can’t take anything more than that.

steakSirloin Alskempi ($24.90) – The sauce is the same as the fish but not in a separate bowl. Can’t really comment on the steak as I didn’t really try it.

chickenCheesy Chicken Chop ($16.90) – Tried some, the meat is tender & the sauce is nice.

We only made reservation the day before. The indoor seats were all reserved. There isn’t any ambiance outdoors along the road. So if you want indoor seats, it’s better to make reservation in advance. Overall we enjoyed the food & the price is net with no service charge & GST.

grub1
grub2Had been wanting that churros fix recently & this place kept popping up in my mind. A rare Sat morn which we managed to get out of bed & out of the house early for brunch.

yuzu soda
Yuzu Mint Soda ($4.50) – A very refreshing sparkling citrus drink.

mushroom soupCream of Mushroom ($8) – Soup of the day. Not too bad but find the price a little steep.

breakfast
GRUB Breakfast Set ($15) – Topped up $2.50 for a pot of Dammann French Breakfast Tea. Otherwise, this set comes with a coffee/tea/homemade or canned drink. On the plate there’s grilled focaccia, scrambled eggs, mushrooms, side salad & garlic thyme pork sausage. There’s also choice of chicken cheese sausage. He particularly enjoyed his bread with the salsa dip.

burger
Pork Steak Burger ($13) – Was contemplating between this or the Portobello Burger but decided on this.  Didn’t regret it. The pork steak has some fats, the meat is tender & can pull out easily.

churrosChurros ($9) – Served with small pot of dark chocolate & tangy creme anglaise (tasted like milk). The portion seems too much for 2 person but we still managed to force it down. Actually you get tired of it after the 2nd stick. I still miss those from Churrosity at Holland Village.

There’s quite a crowd during weekend lunch. So it’s good to be there earlier to secure a seat without queue since they do not take reservation. If the weather is not so hot, the outdoor seats would be nice & relaxing. Perhaps, next time.

Rokeby @ Jalan Riang

rokeby
rokeby2Celebration for him getting another year wiser. He is not so enthusiastic to celebrate it this year as he think he had just crossed the national youth age. Haha.

lemonade
Lemmy Lemonade ($5) – I didn’t expect it in a bottle. The taste is just right. Neither too sour nor too sweet.

calamariGolden Calamari Rings ($10.90) – Just right chewy calamari rings in lightly crisped beer batter, the perfect combination. Goes very well with the chilli mayo dip too.

chicken wingsVegemite Glazed Chicken ($11.90) – We wanted to order the Mushroom Fritters but they ran out of it. So we substituted it with this. Unfortunately, the sauce is not to our liking as we find it too salty & there’s too much crispy bits on the skin.

musselsRokeby Chilli Mussels ($19.90) – You get to choose the spicy level from Zero, Mild, Hero to Legendary. We opted for Mild & it’s just right for us. The sauce is pleasantly savory, a tad sour from the tomatoes & lightly spicy. Totally satisfied with the generous serving of mussels.

stewBraised Ox Cheek Stew ($20.90) – The sauce is addictive. We took the bread served together with the mussels & wiped out this sauce. The mash potato is also velvety smooth. The star got to be the ox cheek. Tender & melts in the mouth, we crave for more of it.

tiramisuHome Made Tiramisu with Bailey’s Irish Cream ($6.50) – In an occasion like this, a cake is a must. It’s more on the bitter side but we like it.

There’s no service charge or GST. The good food made up for the lack of ambiance. Glad that he enjoyed it.

Initially I felt kinda guilty as we were supposed to go somewhere else for high tea but due to my lack of diligence, we didn’t manage to make a reservation. So this place was kinda last min & reservation was only placed the night before. We were given the least romantic table near the entrance which made me even more guilty. The staff was nice & tried to change a table for us but due to some misunderstanding, we stayed put at our table. Guess what, the staff actually gave us a ‘special’ discount because of this. Not that we are hard up for it but we really appreciate their sincerity & kind gesture. Good customer service like this goes a long way. Kudos to Rokeby & their team!
